Google is taking on Apple's AirTag with the launch of its new Find Hub service and tracking device in the latest release of Android 16, an upgrade that includes a number of new features designed to make it easier for users to find everyday items.

With Android 16 and Wear OS 6, Google has upgraded its network of Find My Device services, rebranding them as Find Hub, and plans to gradually add more features to them in the future. One of the first new features to be implemented is support for Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology. This technology is also used in Apple's AirTag, which provides more accurate direction and distance information to help users locate their target faster.

Google has also revealed that it will be working with some airlines to enable users to share the location of their trackers for the purpose of quickly identifying luggage when travelling.

In addition, Google plans to introduce satellite communication capabilities to its Find network for select devices later this year. Users will then be able to send location information or short messages via the Find Hub app to stay in touch even in environments without network coverage.
